Description:
Smart I/O modules feature their own onboard microcontrollers. All modules described in this chapter are Smart I/O modules. During smart module initialization, the module's microcontroller turns off the LED after passing the power-up self-test (POST) and being initialized by the CPU. An illuminated LED indicates an I/O fault.
The CPU also informs each module about which rate group each channel should operate in, along with other specific information (such as thermocouple type for thermocouple modules). During operation, the CPU periodically broadcasts a "key" to all I/O cards, indicating which rate groups currently require updating.
Through this initialization/key broadcast system, each I/O module can handle its own rate group scheduling with minimal CPU intervention. These Smart I/O modules also feature onboard online fault detection and automatic calibration/compensation capabilities. Each input channel has an independent precision voltage reference. The onboard microcontroller reads this reference voltage once per minute when not reading inputs. The microcontroller then uses the data obtained from the voltage reference reading for fault detection and automatic temperature compensation/calibration.
The onboard microcontroller has preset limits for the expected readings when measuring each reference voltage. If a reading falls outside these limits, the system will determine that the input channel, A/D converter, or the channel's precision reference voltage source is malfunctioning. When this occurs, the microcontroller will flag the channel as faulty. The CPU will then execute whatever actions the application engineer has programmed in the application.
